| Our Program...
is industry focussed and customer driven. The fundamental basics
of sound, simple and proven principles apply to the operation as
a whole, regardless of breed. |
|
|
| Every link
in the chain, from breeders, to the commercial producers, to the
feeders, to the packers, to the retailers - requires a quality product
to allow everyone to make a profit. Keeping in mind that the end
product will be the result of the genetic quality utilized at the
time of conception, two things remain constant. First, at the end
of the chain...a quality product is demanded by the consumer; and
second, when you take your product to town, the good ones will sell
well whether the market is high or not. |
|
|
| To enhance
the effectiveness of hybrid vigor, we utilize common sense management,
and distinct genetic matings to maximize our customers' profit margin.
Balanced trait selection, no frills management, sensible development,
and structural soundness are the basics we require and utilize to
improve the economics that are so vital to all producers. |
 |
| Our breeding
program is 60 days, with the bulls pulled from the pastures the
first week of July. The AI period is intensive and many of the females
are AI'd to the bulls that will walk the pasture with them. All
the heifers are synchronized and bred to begin calving two weeks
before the cow herd. |
|
|
Our
breeding decisions are made with one thing in mind - "Will
these genetics help our customers?" We know what our customers
want, so our focus is on balanced trait selection, calving ease,
growth, fertility, and longevity. |
|
|
We're
sticklers for good feet and legs. Our customers expect nothing less.
And, our bulls and cows must be structurally sound to walk the hills.
|
|
|
The
udders on our females are second to none. The most often heard comment
made by visitors, whether they are commercial producers, Charolais
breeders, or Angus breeders, is about the great udders on both the
white and black cows. |
|
|
We weigh every calf at birth, weaning and yearling to acquire and
build accurate data. If you don't know where you've been...how will
you know where you are going? |
|
|
There
are no creep feeders in our pastures. The calves are raised on grass,
water and cows' milk. |
|
|
We feed our yearling bulls to breed...not to grade. They are "developed",
not fattened. They are fed for acceptable performance and longevity. |

We
believe that native and tame grass pastures should be left to
future generations in better condition than when it first came
under our stewardship. We have worked with Ducks Unlimited since
1995 in developing tame pastures on marginal land, cross-fencing,
and water site development and we have enhanced native grass production
through 'responsibly planned' grazing practices. We are proud
of this sign which is displayed at one of our south pastures.

Other
Conservation Agencies we have worked with over the past few
years are: Saskatchewan Wetland Conservation Corporation, Saskatchewan
Water Corporation and Pheasants Forever.
Working with - Conservation Agencies has been instrumental to
the growth and moving forward of our operation. It is a positive
and gratifying experience to know we can make a living in the
cattle business, while preserving habitat and native grass for
future generations.
